Do I need a permit for a deck?
Most decks need one. What triggers a permit, what the inspector checks, and how long it takes.

In most towns, yes. A deck that is attached to the house, more than 30 inches off the ground or larger than about 200 sq ft almost always needs a building permit.
What the inspector checks
Footing depth, the ledger connection to the house, joist spans, stair dimensions and guard height. Most failures we see on old decks are at the ledger.
How long it takes
Two to four weeks is normal around here. We draw the plans and file the permit as part of every build, so it runs while your materials are ordered.
